Fall is coming! Along with Fall come some common pests that want to overwinter in your home. Most insects and bugs do what’s called overwintering. This doesn’t mean an infestation, although in some areas numbers can be significant. As Fall approaches, homeowners start to see them on the outsides of the home looking to exploit penetrations into voids of the home. Homeowners will also see them emerge inside the structure on warmer, winter days.
Below are some common pests you will encounter and five tips for prevention.
The pests:
- The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (stink bug)
- The Western Conifer Seed Bug.
- The Box Elder Bug.
The Tips:
- Inspect the exterior of your home in early August, looking for cracks, gaps, and voids around window seals, doorways, soffits, and chimneys
- Look for congregating pests on the south and west sides on the home
- Seal cracks, and gaps with a weather resistant adhesive such as silicone
- Fill larger voids with a foam filler, or steel wool type material and then seal
